Microsoft gets closer to overtaking Apple as most valuable U.S. company

Microsoft is close to reclaiming the title of most valuable U.S. company, with a market value of $2.73 trillion, only about $100 billion less than Apple. Microsoft’s stock rose 57% in 2023, as compared to 48% for Apple. Microsoft’s Azure cloud-computing business is benefiting from enterprise spending and the AI frenzy, outperforming rival Alphabet Inc. in the cloud. In comparison, Apple is struggling with stagnating business due to heightened competition in China and macroeconomic pressure. They have posted four consecutive quarters of year-over-year revenue declines and have seen two analysts downgrade the stock in 2024.
