Microsoft’s Windows Faces a New Threat From an Old Enemy
From Nasdaq, Inc.:
Microsoft’s Windows operating system remains dominant in the desktop market, with a 72% share at the end of 2023. Statcounter’s statistics show that this is a decline from the past, attributed mainly to an increase in Mac computers and a notable increase in Linux user numbers. For tech-savvy users, game developers have started working on bringing popular PC games to Linux systems. This could lead to more user migration. Meanwhile, Windows still contributes significantly to Microsoft’s revenue and plays a crucial role in the company’s AI and Office monetization strategies.
Linux’s user numbers are growing, partly due to increased game developer support, but remains far behind Windows in market share. However, Valve’s Proton compatibility layer makes popular Windows games playable on Linux-based systems. Over 4,300 games work on Valve’s Linux-powered Steam Deck, changing the situation compared to only a few years ago. Although Windows remains lucrative, this is an area of concern for Microsoft considering the potential loss of market share and the dominance it brings to the company’s overall revenue.
