Nick Saban retired, and high-profile athletes say ‘NIL played a part in this’

Legendary Alabama football coach Nick Saban unexpectedly retired on Wednesday, walking away with six years and $71.8 million remaining on his contract. Some speculate that recent changes to college sports, such as players being able to make money off their names and more relaxed student-athlete transfer rules, led to Saban’s decision. The NCAA started allowing college athletes to earn name, image and likeness money in 2021. Saban has had incredible success in different eras, but experts believe the most recent changes are creating new challenges for coaches. Saban himself expressed frustration with the current system and the state of college football.
