Oklahoma asks some elementary, special education teachers to return up to $50,000 bonuses

Kristina Stadelman, an Oklahoma special education teacher, received a $50K bonus for a hard-to-fill job, only to be told she owed it back, along with nine other teachers. Criticized by legislators, State Superintendent of Public Instruction Ryan Walters suggested that teachers misrepresented their experience, yet lawmakers say the vetting process wasn’t properly executed.

Walters, who has come under fire for misspending, also faced criticism around alleged mismanagement of federal COVID funds. Walters spent more than $4,000 on travel, including speaking engagements and a horror movie premiere, prompting criticism from lawmakers despite the governor’s executive order banning public spending for most out-of-state travel.
