Powerful NRA chief LaPierre resigns ahead of New York graft trial By Reuters
From Investing.com:
Wayne LaPierre resigned as leader of the National Rifle Association amid graft accusations. New York Attorney General Letitia James brings a corruption trial against the NRA, seeking LaPierre’s removal from office. Health reasons were cited for LaPierre’s resignation. The group reported a slide in revenue and membership. Gun control advocates celebrated.
LaPierre played a major role in building the NRA into a political powerhouse. Although membership once reached 5.5 million, it has since declined to 4.2 million. Former NRA board member Phil Journey stated that membership had seen a net loss of 1,000 members a day. The organization’s future relevance depends on the outcome of the upcoming trial.
The future relevance of the NRA may be uncertain. In August 2020, the NRA faced a lawsuit from New York Attorney General James. James accused the NRA of diverting millions of dollars to fund luxuries for top officials, including travel expenses for LaPierre to various resorts. One of the four defendants in the case has settled and admitted improper use of charitable assets.
