A special economic zone on the Honduran island of Roatan has adopted Bitcoin as a unit of account to increase financial freedom for residents and businesses. Transactions and tax obligations within the zone can now be conducted using the cryptocurrency, as announced by Jorge Colindres. Próspera ZEDE is actively working to enable full transactional and reporting functionality in Bitcoin, despite the eGovernance system’s current requirement to report tax calculations in traditional currencies. The move is part of Próspera’s commitment to embracing digital currencies and providing monetary choice within the zone. Despite the growing global interest in digital assets, the Central Bank of Honduras remains cautious about the adoption of cryptocurrencies on a national level. Since its establishment in May 2020, Próspera has attracted investment and job opportunities, positioning itself as an innovative economic hub.
