Russian billionaire who sued Sotheby’s for helping dupe him out of over $160m for da Vinci’s ‘Lost Leonardo’ and other paintings loses art fraud case

Built by Informant: Sotheby’s won Dmitry Rybolovlev’s court case against them. The fertilizer titan alleged that the auction house helped a Swiss art dealer cheat him out of over $160 million. The auction house denied any misconduct and said it was a total vindication.
Rybolovlev accused Sotheby’s of knowing that he was getting cheated and selling him the painting “Salvator Mundi” at a markup – a day after buying it for $83 million, and selling it to Rybolovlev for over $127 million. Rybolovlev sold it later for $450 million and it became the most expensive painting ever sold at auction in 2017.
