OpenAI’s recently reinstated CEO, Sam Altman, expressed concern about Muslim tech workers being afraid to speak out due to fear of retaliation and career damage amid rising religious and racial tensions. Antisemitism and Islamaphobia have surged since Hamas’ attack on Israel, with a 172% increase in bias complaints and a 337% increase in antisemitic incidents reported. Altman called for industry support for his Muslim colleagues.

Altman, speaking out as a Jewish CEO, criticized the lack of support for Muslims compared to Jews. He cited an open letter from Google employees alleging a double standard in the expression and treatment of Israeli versus Arab, Muslim, and Palestinian workers. Google CEO Sundar Pichai addressed the rise in antisemitism and Islamaphobia and offered support to both Jewish and Palestinian, Arab, and Muslim employees.

The tech leader also acknowledged that he had previously underestimated antisemitism, admitting he was “totally wrong.” He has since shifted his stance, as have other tech CEOs, due to the growing hostility against Jews. For example, TikTok’s CEO held a meeting with Jewish executives to discuss how the platform can reduce antisemitic content and bias. Other politicians and executives, such as Pfizer’s CEO, have also addressed the issue of on-campus antisemitism.
