Samsung packs newest Galaxy S24 smartphones with AI functions to beat Apple
From Nasdaq:
Samsung Electronics unveiled its latest premium smartphones, featuring multiple new AI-functions including simultaneous translation of phone calls, as it seeks to take on Apple in the premium device market. According to the International Data Corporation, Apple surpassed Samsung in smartphone shipments in 2023, primarily driven by the demand for premium devices. As a response, Samsung is offering new AI functions in its Galaxy S24 models. These functions include two-way voice translation in real-time, 13 different language translations, “circle-to-search” image search, and more.
The use of on-device AI is central to Samsung’s new smartphone functions, allowing for capabilities to be downloaded directly to user devices, enhancing security. Data provider Canalys forecasts that only 5% of smartphones shipped in 2024 will be AI-capable, growing to 45% by 2027. The impact of generative AI on devices is expected to bring significant changes in the long-term, improving user experience. However, time is needed for these AI functions to incorporate more data and increase value for consumers.
The Samsung Galaxy S24 series will be available for purchase starting Jan 31, with the base model starting at $799, the S24 Plus at $999, and the S24 Ultra at $1,299. While the prices for the base model and Plus model have remained the same, the Ultra model has seen a $100 increase in price from last year’s model.
