Breaking News: 93% of 2023’s stock market wealth is owned by the top 10% of society, according to the Federal Reserve. The S&P 500 doubled in value from 2020 to 2023, with many retail investors not receiving a significant gain.
Shocking statistics show that only 58% of all Americans are invested in stocks yet the top 10% have truly valuable holdings. We saw record breaking values, yet the wealth does not equally disperse amongst those invested in stocks.
The wealth divide between the top 10% and the rest this year was quite high, and that’s reflected in the stock market. As equity values increased, the gap between the wealthy owning stocks and the rest of Americans also magnified.
The rich are receiving most of the stock growth, and the wealthy had increased their wealth holdings. The pandemic and government policies seem to have worsened income disparity.
The top 1% own 54% of the stock market wealth, up from 40% in 2000. Policy decisions have pushed money more into assets over wages, increasing eroding income for many Americans.
