From Morningstar:

1. The VanEck Crypto & Blockchain Innovators ETF was the top-performing ETP of 2023, yielding a stunning 255% return. It was followed by Global X Blockchain UCITS ETF, with both funds primarily focusing on blockchain and cryptocurrencies. Solana (SOL) experienced the highest gain among altcoins, increasing by around 1,000%.

2. The resurgence of crypto in 2023 saw Bitcoin (BTC) climbing by almost 160%, currently priced at $45,339. The US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has been approached by several companies, including BlackRock, Grayscale Investments, and ARK Investments to launch spot ETFs on Bitcoin in early 2024.

3. ETFs for natural gas, industrial metals, and solar stocks closed in the bottom performing list for 2023. Factors such as mild weather and record production pushed down natural gas, while solar stocks were hit by material costs and political uncertainty.

4. December’s best-performing ETFs primarily focused on blockchain and digital assets, while the worst-performing ETF, WisdomTree Sugar ETC, experienced a 21% monthly loss. Other declining ETFs in December included commodities such as soybean and natural gas, as well as the Turkish stock exchange.
