The world needs an International Decade for Data–or risk splintering into AI ‘haves’ and ‘have-nots,’ UN researchers warn

Data-driven technologies shape our lives from biometric data, AI tools, and social media algorithms. This risks creating new inequalities between data-rich and data-poor societies. Though useful, data needs better governance on a global scale. While global internet bandwidth surged, low-income countries are left behind. Efforts to track violent extremist experimentation with AI uncovered over 5,000 instances of AI propaganda. We need more diverse and targeted data collection to make technology responsive to underrepresented communities, and governments can lead the call for a UN International Decade for Data starting in 2025.
