United Airlines’ Boeing 737 Max 9 inspections turn up loose bolts
From CNBC:
United Airlines has found loose bolts on door plugs of several Boeing 737 Max 9 planes during inspections following a panel blowing out on an Alaska Airlines flight. The Federal Aviation Administration grounded dozens of 737 Max 9s and United Airlines has 79 of the planes in its fleet, which have been undergoing preliminary inspections.
The loose bolts were found during preliminary inspections and United Airlines has stated that these instances will be remedied by their Tech Ops team to safely return the aircraft to service.
No one was seriously injured in the accident aboard the Alaska Airlines flight, but it has placed fresh scrutiny on Boeing, which has been dealing with quality defects while also ramping up aircraft production.
The National Transportation Safety Board stated that the accident would have been worse at cruising altitude, and Boeing has issued instructions to airlines to conduct inspections of the Max 9s in their fleets. CEO Dave Calhoun canceled a company leadership summit and plans to hold an all-employee call on Tuesday.
Alaska Airlines is set to inspect its fleet of more than 60 737 Max 9s, but there has been no comment on whether they, too, have found loose bolts. The 737 Max is Boeing’s best-selling aircraft, with more than 4,000 orders to fill, with the majority of those being the Max 8.
