FDA clears Florida’s plan to import prescription drugs from Canada. These imports will come with a two year expiration date. The policy change is a shift after successful lobbying by the pharmaceutical industry and former President Donald Trump. The FDA said Florida’s health department must provide a report to the FDA on the types of drugs imported, cost savings and any potential safety issues. Many people already buy some medicines from Canada or Mexico, even though it is technically illegal to import these medicines. The FDA is likely to face legal challenges over the decision, which the pharmaceutical industry’s trade group called “a serious danger to public health.” The U.S. government also has almost no leverage over the prices set by drugmakers.
