US Senators urge Tesla, other automakers to stay neutral in union organizing

From Nasdaq:

33 U.S. senators are urging Tesla and 12 other automakers to stay neutral in the United Auto Workers’ organizing efforts. The letter, signed by multiple Democrats, asks manufacturers to respect workers’ rights and not interfere with organizing activities.

VW refutes claims of union-busting and intimidation at its Tennessee plant, stating that it respects workers’ right to decide on union representation. However, Toyota and Rivian declined to comment, while other automakers did not respond to requests for comment.

The UAW announced campaigns by workers at 13 nonunion automakers to join the union, aiming to publicly organize the entire nonunion auto sector in the U.S. following record new contracts with the Detroit Three automakers.

The UAW’s deals with General Motors, Ford Motor, and Stellantis included significant pay increases and improvements in working conditions, prompting non-union automakers to respond by hiking pay for U.S. factory workers.

Efforts to organize auto factories operated by foreign automakers have been unsuccessful, with the UAW failing to organize Nissan and VW plants in Tennessee. Last month, 30% of workers at VW’s Tennessee plant signed union authorization cards.
