US STOCKS-Dow hits two-week low as Boeing plummets; megacaps lift Nasdaq

The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell to a two-week low due to a Boeing nosedive. Boeing slipped 9.1% after the temporary grounding of some 737 MAX 9 jets. The company could face a $13.5 billion loss. Alaska Air Group slumped 3.9% after cancelling 200 flights related to the grounding.

Investors scaled back their expectations on when the Federal Reserve could begin rate cuts. Money markets now see a 64.7% chance of at least a 25-basis-point (bps) rate cut as early as March. Dallas’ Lorie Logan’s warning over the weekend and Atlanta’s Raphael Bostic’s remarks will be analyzed for their stance on monetary policy easing.

Energy led declines with a 2.8% loss as crude prices sank nearly 5%. The Dow Jones fell to 37,280.32, the S&P 500 was up 4,708.97, and the Nasdaq Composite was up 14,628.33. Apple climbed 0.9%, and Amazon.com and Alphabet added 1.1% and 0.5% respectively. Retail mixed-reality device available for sale from Feb. 2.

JPMorgan Chase, Wells Fargo, Bank of America and Citigroup all lost more than 1%. Advancing issues outnumbered decliners by a 1.20-to-1 ratio on the NYSE and by a 1.05-to-1 ratio on the Nasdaq.
