Weight-loss drugs are getting pricier
From Fortune:
Ozempic, a type 2 diabetes treatment used as a weight loss drug, is now pricier—its cost increased by 3.5% at the beginning of the year, with prices almost reaching $970 per month. Mounjaro, a type 2 diabetes medication often used off-label for weight loss, saw a 4.5% price spike, reaching $1,070 per month.
775 name-brand drugs including Ozempic and Mounjaro became more expensive in the first half of January, with some brands seeing as much as a 10% jump. This goes beyond the current rate of inflation.
46brooklyn Research reports that an unusual 452 drugs increased in price on Jan. 1. This is lower than recent years but indicative of a trend in price hikes.
The increase could be especially concerning to patients whose health care plans do not cover Ozempic, Mounjaro, or other drugs when ordered for weight-loss issues.
Ozempic and similar drugs are experiencing a surge in popularity, leading to a record number of prescriptions written between 2020 and the end of 2022. More doctors are using these drugs off-label, leading to concern over the price increases and patients’ ability to pay.
