When Social Security Recipients Will Get Checks This Month
From Time:
Many Social Security checks have already been distributed, but the final round of payments for January will be sent out this week. Recipients will see a 3.2% cost-of-living adjustment for 2024, lower than last year’s 8.7% increase, but still above average. The average monthly payment was $1,767 as of December 2023.
Payments will vary depending on the recipient’s birth date. SSI recipients received their payments on Dec. 29, while Social Security recipients received theirs on Jan. 3, Jan. 10, and Jan. 17. This week, payments will be distributed to beneficiaries with birthdays between the 21st and 31st of January.
If you are due to receive a payment and believe it has not arrived on time, it is recommended to wait three business days before inquiring with the SSA. You can also check your payment status online and contact SSA at 1-800-772-1213.
The SSA has a payment schedule for beneficiaries based on their birth date. Typically, most payments are distributed on the second, third, and fourth Wednesday of the month. However, the schedule may vary for SSI beneficiaries and those who receive both SSI and Social Security benefits.
To calculate your Social Security benefit, the SSA uses a formula based on your average indexed monthly earnings during the 35 years you earned the most income. You can check your earning history and calculate your benefit by creating or logging into your online Social Security account.
