A reformed mobster confessed to stealing “The Wizard of Oz” ruby slippers in the belief that they contained real jewels to justify their insured value of $1 million. Martin, now 76, thought his theft was “one last score” after his old associate urged him to steal the famous shoes.

The infamous ruby slippers were recovered by the FBI in 2018. Martin has pleaded guilty to the theft and is set for sentencing on Jan. 29. He is firmly in favor of time already served, amid poor health with a prognosis of less than 6 months to live.

Martin’s attorney has presented evidence that Martin had a troubled upbringing and an array of hardships. This influenced his attraction to a life of crime and similarly, to seek one final big payoff.

Terry hadn’t tried to participate in any other crimes for nearly ten years, until he was led to the shoes. He has had several acts of tragedy and loss that have impacted his life and decisions. His most recent girlfriend to bear him children unexpectedly died.

Meanwhile, Garland donned several pairs of ruby slippers in the classic musical and only four authentic pairs remain. The stolen slippers cost $1 million insured but prosecutors estimate their present value at about $3.5 million.

Three other pairs of slippers are held by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the Smithsonian Museum of American History, and a private collector. Multiple rewards were offered over the years, hoping to uncover the slippers’ thief which was a prop in the film, Judy Garland lived and was born in Grand Rapids, Minnesota, about 200 miles north of Minneapolis until she was 4 years old.
