Social Security numbers have become an important and ubiquitous part of American society, used for receiving benefits, tracking tax returns, and opening bank accounts or taking out loans. In the past, there were hidden codes in the SSN that indicated area, group, and chronological order, but the Social Security Administration stopped using this system in 2011, moving to random assignment of numbers. This change, while better for the administration, disadvantaged those attempting to verify the legitimacy of a SSN, because numbers were no longer assigned in a precise pattern.
