21 million Indonesians will go online by 2027, lowering digital divide: Indosat CEO

From Fortune:

1. Indonesia is working hard to expand internet access across 17,000 islands, but the investment thus far has not been able to reach everyone, especially those in remote areas.

2. Even though 78% of Indonesians now have internet access, 22% don’t. The majority of unconnected Indonesians live in non-metro urban areas.

3. Indosat Ooredoo Hutchinson CEO Vikram Sinha anticipates that 21 million more Indonesians will have internet access by 2027.

4. Indosat Ooredoo Hutchinson is spending money on expanding its cellular business and network coverage to rural areas, in hopes of capitalizing on sticky revenue, or the tendency of customers to remain loyal to a specific service provider.

5. Sinha is building the case for turning IOH from a simple telecom company to a tech giant, generating $15 million last year.

6. Following the merger of two of Indonesias’ biggest telecom players, Indosat Ooredoo Hutchinson CEO Vikram Sinha and his team worked hard to regain Fitch’s confidence and improve the company’s financial outlook.

7. Despite concerns about the success of the merger, IOH is doing well in the eyes of credit rating agencies, with improved margins and revenue per user.

8. IOH’s revenue grew by 10% in 2023 and data traffic increased by 14.8%. The company is also investing heavily in expanding 4G transceiver stations.

9. Fortune is hosting the Fortune Innovation Forum in Hong Kong on March 27–28 to discuss New Strategies for Growth in a fast-changing world.
