‘AI godfather’, others urge more deepfake regulation in open letter

Artificial intelligence experts and industry executives, led by Yoshua Bengio, are urging for more regulation on deepfake creation to protect society from potential risks. The letter for regulation, titled “Disrupting the Deepfake Supply Chain,” recommends full criminalization of deepfake child pornography and criminal penalties for creating or spreading harmful deepfakes. Over 400 individuals, including prominent figures like Steven Pinker and two former Estonian presidents, have signed the letter. There have been concerns and warnings about AI risks, including Elon Musk’s call for a pause in developing more powerful systems.
