Amazon will exclusively stream an NFL playoff game next year
From Fortune:
In 2024-2025, Amazon will stream its first NFL playoff game to an estimated 23 million viewers. The decision follows record viewership numbers for Amazon’s Thursday Night Football coverage, which saw a 24% increase overall. The move also comes after the success of Peacock’s streaming of the Kansas City Chiefs and Miami Dolphins game.
Amazon had the opportunity to stream the Chiefs-Dolphins game which aired on Peacock, but declined. NBCUniversal paid a reported $110 million for the game, but Amazon exercised their right of refusal to air the game as part of their original contract with the NFL. Amazon hopes the game will boost the number of viewers for its sports content.
Before the January playoff game between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Miami Dolphins, Peacock saw an estimated 2.8 million new subscribers sign up, the highest number of acquisitions the firm has ever seen. This was the first time a playoff game was live streamed. While some fans were unhappy with the additional service, the NFL was pleased with the viewership numbers and is open to more streaming exclusives moving forward.
In a statement, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell expressed satisfaction with the partnership with Peacock. Goodell expressed pride in being able to show the game digitally, claiming that it was the future of sports entertainment.
