Apple to disclose AI plans later this year, CEO Tim Cook says

From Nasdaq:

Apple CEO Tim Cook announced plans to reveal more about the company’s use of generative artificial intelligence later this year, emphasizing its potential for transformative opportunities. Despite trailing competitors like Microsoft and Google in AI development, Cook stated that Apple products already utilize AI and hinted at upcoming AI features. Shareholders rejected a proposal to disclose more about Apple’s AI use and ethical guidelines.

The pension trust of AFL-CIO proposed Apple disclose its AI operations and ethical guidelines, a request that was ultimately rejected by shareholders. The union federation’s concerns included transparency, consent, and compensation for creators and rights holders when training AI systems. Apple argued against the measure, stating that disclosure could impact its competitive edge in the AI sector. A similar proposal will be presented at Disney’s annual meeting in April.
