Mike Salguero’s ButcherBox company was built on the foundation of free bacon incentives. The meat subscription company made good on a promise to give Kickstarter backers free bacon–but ended up giving it to everyone. The screw-up turned into an effective marketing strategy, attracting new customers. It has since rolled out several “for-life” campaigns, including bacon, chicken wings, ground beef, and steaks. The result? 400,000 subscribers and a $500 million valuation. For Salguero himself, he enjoys cooking Tomahawk steaks and ribeye on the grill.
