Chile’s deadly fires were intentionally lit, says governor

From Fortune:

Stay-at-home orders have been extended in Chile’s Valparaiso region as forest fires continue, having killed at least 56 people and caused widespread destruction. President Gabriel Boric has declared a state of emergency. The fires may have been intentionally set, says Governor Rodrigo Mundaca. Power and water services are disrupted, with the state’s second largest oil refinery halting operations.

The blazes in Viña del Mar, northwest of Santiago, have spread due to windy weather conditions. The government estimates between 3,000 and 6,000 hectares and 1,000 homes have been razed. Over 300 people are still missing.

Despite a halt in operations at Enap’s oil refinery, the transport of copper from the Los Bronces mine remains unaffected. However, it’s unknown if there’s any logistical impact on the nearby Andina mine, as Codelco didn’t immediately comment when asked. A state-owned energy company official said operations will gradually restart.
