Chinese carmaker adds satellites in Musk SpaceX territory

From fortune.com:

Geespace, a subsidiary of Zhejiang Geely Holding Group Co., launched 11 satellites on a Chinese rocket, a move that will allow the satellites to be utilized in a variety of technological sectors. This is the second such launch they have conducted, and they have plans to add to the constellation in the future.

Geespace is seeking to deploy a network of satellites that would provide communication and support other features in Geely vehicles, as well as links for consumer electronics. With space infrastructure and competition in China’s auto market heating up, satellite communications are becoming another important feature.

China plans to rapidly establish a massive constellation in low-Earth orbit, but state-owned enterprises has been dragging their feet. This new launch puts Geespace on a tight schedule in order to meet their goals for future satellite launches.

The company has big plans for its new technology, planning to expand its usage and production capacity in the near future. They have sold dozens of their satellites to other Chinese entities involved in space.
