Crowd sets Waymo self-driving vehicle ablaze in San Francisco

From Nasdaq:

A crowd in San Francisco vandalized and set fire to a Waymo self-driving car, marking the most destructive attack on a driverless vehicle in the U.S. Witnesses described people celebrating China’s Lunar New Year by setting off fireworks before jumping on the vehicle, breaking its windshield, and setting it on fire, according to Reuters.

The car, which was not transporting any riders, was engulfed in flames with black smoke. Waymo said a firework thrown inside the vehicle set it on fire. The San Francisco Police Department is investigating the cause of the fire and did not mention arrests.

The Waymo spokesperson said that Saturday’s incident was a one-off event and that the company will continue serving riders during the Super Bowl festivities. This is not the first time people have harassed self-driving cars, but its severity may illustrate growing public hostility following a recent pedestrian-dragging accident.

Last week, a driverless Waymo car collided with a cyclist in San Francisco, causing minor injuries, and the incident is being reviewed by the state’s auto regulator. California has suspended the testing license for self-driving vehicles after a pedestrian was hit and dragged by a self-driving Cruise vehicle.
