DeSantis to Disney: ‘Move on’ from appeal of free speech lawsuit
From Fortune:
Disney has appealed a judge’s dismissal of its lawsuit over alleged free speech violations by Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, who called the appeal “a mistake.” The company argues that the state’s takeover of Walt Disney World’s governance was in retaliation for Disney’s opposition to a controversial law banning classroom discussions on sexual orientation.
The legislation transferring control of the Disney World governing district to DeSantis appointees was signed by DeSantis and passed by the Republican-controlled Legislature. Disney had run the district for over five decades, providing municipal services such as firefighting, planning, and mosquito control. DeSantis claims that the district administrator and the new DeSantis-allied district have refused to provide necessary documents or sit for a deposition, while charging that the “eleventh-hour deals” signed by Disney had neutered their powers. The state court lawsuit filed by the Disney World governing district is still pending. What progress Disney’s appeal will make remains in question.
