ESPN, Fox and Warner Bros. Discovery to launch joint sports streaming platform this year

From NBCUniversal:

Disney, Fox, and Warner Bros. Discovery are launching a joint sports streaming service this fall. The platform, owned by a newly formed company with a one-third stake from each, does not have a name or price yet. Consumers can subscribe via a new app and bundle with Disney+, Hulu, and Max.

The service will offer a skinnier bundle of linear networks specifically for sports fans, including Disney, Fox, and Warner Bros. Discovery’s sports networks. CEO Bob Iger called it a significant moment for Disney and ESPN, a major win for sports fans, and an important step forward for the media business.

The launch of the service will not stop ESPN from offering a full direct-to-consumer streaming product, which Disney is still researching. The joint service is coming at a time when the value of sports media rights is spiking, but viewers have moved away from traditional cable.

Disney has suffered from a shift away from its ESPN network and is seeking new ways to revive the business, including strategic partnerships with major sports leagues. This is breaking news, so please check back for updates.
