The Federal Communications Commission (FCC)has outlawed robocalls containing voices generated by AI, to prevent people from being scammed and voters being misled. The ruling authorizes fines on companies using AI voices or blocking their service providers. Offenders can face lawsuits and fines up to $23,000 per call. New Hampshire authorities are investigating AI robocalls impersonating President Joe Biden, discouraging voting. Calls cannot impersonate celebrities, extort family members, misinform voters. The ruling empowers recipients, allows legal action and up to $1,500 damages per call. AI tools and generative software continue to threaten elections; Congress seeks regulate AI in political campaigns. AI-regulated robocalls in New Hampshire’s primary sought to influence the election, disguised as voter suppression. FCC terminates Texas-based Life Corp. and Lingo Telecom for previous illegal robocalls, sending cease-and-desist letters. Lingo Telecom has a history of illegal robocalls and was previously ordered to protect its network by a task force of attorneys general. Lingo Telecom quickly reacted to the investigation and suspended Life Corporation upon contacting the task force.
