FuboTV sues Disney, Fox, Warner Bros. over sports joint venture
From CNBC:
FuboTV is suing Disney, Fox, and Warner Bros. Discovery over their sports streaming venture, claiming it’s anti-competitive. The joint venture aims to offer a new way to access live sports and is set to launch this fall, but concerns around pricing and structure remain. The lawsuit alleges that the companies are colluding and creating barriers to competition.
The lawsuit also names Disney-owned ESPN and Hulu as defendants. FuboTV CEO David Gandler accused the companies of engaging in anti-competitive practices and monopolizing the market. A spokesperson for the joint venture declined to comment.
Fubo alleges that Disney, Fox, and Warner Bros. imposed bundling requirements and above-market licensing fees on Fubo, inflating prices for consumers. The new joint venture would allow the companies to undercut those prices and have a competitive edge, the lawsuit claims.
The joint venture raised concerns in the traditional pay-TV market, with major distributors privately voicing concerns about the potential impact on cable TV cancellations. Analysts believe antitrust challenges are likely to arise from the venture.
