Higher medical costs are pinching CVS, UnitedHealth

From CNBC:

1. Health insurers are experiencing increased medical costs for Medicare Advantage patients as more older adults are returning to hospitals for delayed procedures. Companies like CVS and Humana have seen a spike in medical costs, with Humana experiencing a significant jump in their fourth-quarter medical benefit ratio. UnitedHealth Group is also facing similar challenges.

2. Genetic testing company 23andMe is struggling after reporting lower revenue in the fiscal third quarter and facing a deficiency letter from the Nasdaq Listing Qualifications Department. The company is considering splitting up its consumer and therapeutics businesses, while also dealing with over 30 class-action lawsuits following a data breach that affected nearly 7 million people.

3. Amazon recently announced layoffs across its pharmacy and primary care provider One Medical units. This comes as part of the company’s aggressive cost-cutting efforts, which have also included job cuts in other divisions. Despite its ambitions in health care, Amazon is not exempt from these aggressive cost-cutting measures.
