Israel And Hamas Inch Towards Ceasefire, Hostage Release Deal
From Nasdaq:
Hamas is considering a ceasefire and hostage release proposal drafted by U.S., Egypt, Qatar and Israel, according to Reuters.
The deal would see Israel cease military action for six days in the Gaza Strip as Hama delivers remaining civilian hostages. It has been initially supported by Hamas. Depending on its success, the ceasefire would be extended to allow for the release of female Israeli military personnel and then male soldiers. Hamas is also demanding the release of thousands of Palestinian prisoners.
However, Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has stated he will not withdraw military from the Gaza Strip until securing “absolute victory” against Hamas. He also criticized President Joe Biden’s executive order imposing financial sanctions on Israeli settlers engaging in violence against Palestinians.
The next target of the Israeli military operations could be the city of Rafah in the south of the Gaza Strip, which is on the border with Egypt. More than a million refugees from Gaza City and Khan Younis have been displaced to Rafah, and many are living in tents in unsanitary conditions.
