Jack Dorsey’s Bluesky Gains Momentum After Mark Zuckerberg’s Meta Sidelines Political Content On Instagram And Threads

From Nasdaq, Inc.:

Social media company Meta recently announced plans to exclude political content from its Instagram and Threads recommendations, sparking interest in decentralized social media platform Bluesky. Bluesky offers customizable feeds and user autonomy, compared to Meta’s centralized platforms. The CEO of Bluesky emphasized that a single company controlling algorithms can have potential issues.

Bluesky allows users to curate their social media experience by choosing to follow politically themed custom feeds and trending topics or to exclude politics entirely. The platform operates on the AT Protocol and will integrate with ActivityPub, which is used by popular open-source competitor Mastodon. Threads plans to join the ActivityPub-powered federated network, but Meta’s moderation decisions will still apply to all users due to Threads’ 130 million monthly active users. Bluesky has almost doubled its user base to nearly 5 million since its recent public launch due to its user-friendly customizable features.

This development comes after Meta’s announcement of enhanced election safeguards for 2024, aimed at tackling misinformation during elections in major democracies. Additionally, Bluesky recently dropped its invite-only model and opened its doors to all interested users. The platform, backed by former Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey, saw over 3 million sign-ups since its launch. Bluesky’s decision to remove the invite-only sign-up system and focus on user choice and customization positions it as a strong competitor to Meta’s centralized platforms.
