Jay-Z criticized the Recording Academy during his Grammy Awards acceptance speech for not recognizing his wife, Beyoncé, with the Album of the Year Award. During his speech, Jay-Z accepted the Dr. Dre Global Impact Award and addressed the ongoing issues within the Recording Academy. The award is exclusively designated for Black music creators to acknowledge their influence on the music industry. Previous recipients include John Legend, Dr. Dre, and Missy Elliott.

The Global Impact Award is given to Black music creators who have greatly influenced the industry. Other recipients include Lenny Kravitz and Mariah Carey. This award recognizes Jay-Z’s dedication to the art form and his influence on the music industry.
