Microsoft enters into ‘strategic partnership’ with OpenAI’s european rival Mistral AI

Microsoft has partnered with Mistral AI, a rival to OpenAI, in a move that could solidify its AI dominance. The deal comes amidst antitrust investigations in Europe and the UK. No financial details have been disclosed yet, but Microsoft will make its AI models available on Azure cloud through the partnership.
Mistral AI’s latest model, Mistral Large, boasts multilingual capabilities and strong reasoning skills, setting it apart from OpenAI’s GPT-4. This model marks Mistral’s shift to commercial models, previously being open-source. Microsoft will also invest in Mistral AI, further cementing their partnership and potential market dominance in the AI space.
In a blog post, Microsoft’s Eric Boyd highlighted the partnership with Mistral AI, emphasizing the companies’ dedication to innovation. Mistral Large, with a 32K tokens context window, aims to provide precise information recall from large documents. The AI models will be available through Azure AI Studio and Azure Machine Learning model catalog for customers.
Mistral AI’s Le Chat, a multilingual conversational assistant, was also unveiled alongside Mistral Large. Le Chat, similar to ChatGPT, offers a user-friendly interface to explore Mistral’s technology. With Microsoft’s backing, Mistral AI aims to leverage Azure AI’s infrastructure to enhance its models and provide real-world solutions for customers.
