New Study Cites AI as Strategic Tool to Combat Climate Change

From NVIDIA:

A study by the Information Technology and Innovation Foundation (ITIF) calls for the increased adoption of AI to drive energy efficiency and combat climate change. It emphasizes the role of AI in reducing carbon emissions and promoting clean energy technologies. The report highlights ways in which machine learning is already helping various sectors reduce their environmental impact, such as in agriculture, utilities, logistics, and manufacturing.

Daniel Castro, the author of the study, warns against overlooking the beneficial impacts of AI due to exaggerated forecasts and urges the government to seize the opportunities for decarbonization across various sectors, particularly in regulated areas like healthcare.

The report also emphasizes the potential for maximizing energy efficiency in data centers using AI and accelerated computing. For instance, NVIDIA’s AI-based weather-prediction model is significantly faster and consumes less energy than current techniques. Data centers could save a substantial amount of electricity each year by utilizing AI and accelerators instead of CPUs.

Furthermore, the combination of accelerated computing and AI is driving new scientific instruments to understand and combat climate change. NVIDIA’s initiative, Earth-2, aims to build a digital twin of Earth on a supercomputer capable of simulating global climate. Similarly, the pan-European project, Destination Earth, is utilizing accelerated computing and AI to create digital twins of the planet. Experts in the utility sector also agree that AI will play a crucial role in maintaining stability for an electric grid.

NVIDIA has committed to using 100% renewable energy starting in fiscal year 2025 and is actively contributing to sustainable computing efforts.
