NFL bars teams from gambling in Las Vegas
From CNBC:
The NFL is holding Super Bowl 58 in Las Vegas for the first time, but Commissioner Roger Goodell has reminded team personnel that they are not allowed to take part in any form of gambling. This includes not only sports betting but also playing casino games or even entering a sportsbook in Vegas until the Super Bowl concludes on Feb. 11.
With sports gambling now legal in 38 states, the NFL has issued strict guidelines for all of its personnel. The league has seen a significant increase in gambling transactions during the NFL playoffs, and Super Bowl 58 in Vegas is expected to be the most bet on NFL championship ever.
The memo from Goodell contains a list of rules that apply to owners, executives, coaches, and other team personnel. Separate, tougher restrictions apply to players, who are subject to one- or two-year or indefinite suspensions if caught gambling on their own team or other games.
The league’s rules also apply to NFL office staff, who are banned from gambling of any kind at any time. Additionally, personnel are reminded to never share any “inside information” about games, teams, or players and to report any requests for that data. Employees are also being instructed to avoid sportsbooks, even for food and drink, while at the Super Bowl in Vegas, with teams staying in hotels about 30 minutes away from the Las Vegas strip to help prevent temptation.
