Sony cuts PlayStation 5 sales forecast to 21 million units

From NBC Universal:

Sony aims to sell 18 million PlayStation 5 consoles by March 2023, downsizing from their previous goal of 25 million. The company has posted record quarterly revenue but lowered its sales forecast for the PS5. It also trimmed its gaming division sales forecast by 210 billion yen to 4.15 trillion yen, citing an expected decrease in hardware sales.

Nintendo, too, is trying to maintain interest in its seven-year-old Switch console. Sony’s gaming business saw a 16% rise in sales year-on-year to 1.4 trillion yen this December, but operating profit fell 26% due to increased losses from hardware promotions and a drop in sales of first-party games.

Sony reported a 21% increase in its image sensor business, and plans to partially spin off its financial services business, with a listing set for October 2025. The company also recently scrapped a planned merger with Indian firm Zee Entertainment and is now seeking other growth opportunities in India.
