Temu Goes Viral — Good And Bad — With ‘Shop Like A Billionaire’ Super Bowl Commercial
From Nasdaq:
Temu, an e-commerce company, was a big spender on Super Bowl commercials, airing the same ad several times at a cost of $7 million per 30-second spot. Media companies like Paramount Global benefitted from higher ad rates and strong demand. The Temu ad, featuring a catchy refrain, was named one of the worst Super Bowl LVIII commercials by Ad Age.
The inclusion of a Super Bowl ad from Temu, a Chinese-owned company, drew security concerns and data privacy concerns, leading to comments from elected officials. U.S. Senator Tom Cotton said, “Just like TikTok, Temu or any Chinese company must allow the Communist Party unfettered access to its data. This should be a non-starter for doing business in the United States.” U.S. Representative Kat Cammack called Temu “one of the most dangerous apps owned by the CCP that is designed to steal all of your data.”
Despite the backlash, searches for Temu trended higher during the Super Bowl, and the app saw an increase in downloads and daily active users after last year’s Super Bowl ad. According to Google Trends data, Temu was the No. 3 free app on the Google Play Store. Shares of PDD Holdings, the company that owns Temu, were up 3% to $131.57 on Monday.
