Tiger Woods, TaylorMade sign apparel deal following his Nike split
From NBC Universal:
Golf legend Tiger Woods has officially partnered with TaylorMade to create a new lifestyle and performance brand called Sun Day Red. The brand, set to launch in May, pays tribute to Woods’ history of wearing red on Sundays and includes a tiger logo representing his 15 majors. The announcement comes after Woods’ split from Nike, with whom he had partnered for 27 years. Despite his reduced on-course presence due to injuries, experts believe the partnership will have a significant impact on TaylorMade’s brand exposure, similar to Michael Jordan’s influence on Air Jordans.
The deal with TaylorMade also aligns with Woods’ ownership of a new tech-focused indoor golf league, TGL, set to launch next year with a broadcast deal on ESPN, further boosting the brand’s potential. Prior to the partnership’s announcement, TaylorMade had been filing trademarks related to the brand, including graphics and logos. Legal experts believe this move indicates the creation of a new entity to own the brand, giving Woods equity in the company. Neither Nike nor Woods’ representatives were available for comment on the specifics of the agreement.
