Amazon.com Inc. is investing $2.75 billion in Anthropic, an AI startup, to advance generative AI technology. This follows a previous $1.25 billion investment, bringing Amazon’s total investment in Anthropic to $4 billion. Amazon plans to leverage Anthropic’s cutting-edge Claude 3 models to enhance customer innovation in the AI space.

The investment in Anthropic is the largest external investment in Amazon’s history. Anthropic, founded by former OpenAI executives, has upgraded its chatbot, Claude, with image analysis capabilities, rivalling Google and OpenAI. Amazon will maintain a minority stake in Anthropic and will not hold a board seat.

Anthropic recently faced controversy when Elon Musk raised concerns about the Claude AI chatbot’s responses. Despite this, the company secured institutional investments after a bankrupt cryptocurrency exchange sold its stake. The investment was made at Anthropic’s last valuation of $18.4 billion, highlighting the company’s growth and potential in the AI market.
