Amazon’s Zoox robotaxis to drive faster, farther, at night in Las Vegas

From Nasdaq:

Amazon’s self-driving car unit, Zoox, is expanding vehicle testing to include wider areas in California and Nevada, allowing higher speeds and nighttime driving. The fleet consists of uniquely designed vehicles without manual controls, while also operating retrofitted Toyota Highlanders in various cities.

Zoox’s moves are minor compared to Waymo, with plans to launch a taxi service in Los Angeles. The specially designed Zoox vehicles can now go up to 45 mph, while expanding testing areas in Las Vegas. Zoox aims to gather crucial data by driving in light rain and at night to advance self-driving technology.

Zoox, like its competitors, aims to replace human drivers with fully autonomous vehicles. Despite Amazon’s acquisition in 2020, Zoox’s plans beyond robotaxis remain undisclosed. General Motors’ Cruise faced regulatory issues last year, halting testing after an accident involving a Cruise vehicle.

Amazon’s purchase of Zoox for over $1 billion in 2020 has sparked speculation over potential delivery use. Zoox’s future plans remain uncertain, though the possibility of Amazon utilizing the cars as delivery vehicles to reduce driver costs is considered. No official announcements regarding Amazon’s intentions have been made.
