US bipartisan bill aims to ban TikTok unless parent company ByteDance sells it
The White House supports a bipartisan bill which aims to ban TikTok unless its parent company, ByteDance, sells it due to national security concerns over data usage and storage.
Despite this, President Biden’s re-election campaign has joined TikTok to reach younger voters. The bill, named the Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act, would allow the president to ban any apps controlled by ByteDance in the US, unless they sever ties with the company. US House is set to vote next week.
The White House, however, does not see this as a ban, but as a necessary step for national security. If the bill passes, it could face legal challenges from TikTok, similar to the lawsuit against the Trump administration’s attempted ban in 2020.
