Apple China iPhone sales plunge 24% as Huawei’s popularity surges
From Nasdaq:
Apple’s iPhone sales in China dropped 24% in early 2024, facing tough competition from local brands like Huawei. Huawei, in contrast, saw a 64% increase in unit sales during the same period. This shift in the market saw Apple’s market share fall to 15.7%, while Huawei rose to second place with a 16.5% share.
The overall smartphone market in China shrank by 7%, with Apple attributing its drop to competition from Huawei and other local brands like OPPO, Vivo, and Xiaomi. In response, Apple began offering subsidies of up to 1,300 yuan on certain iPhone models and discounts up to 500 yuan on their official sites. Huawei’s premium smartphone sales soared after releasing the Mate 60 series.
Honor, a brand spun off from Huawei, was the only other top-five brand to see sales rise, with Vivo, Xiaomi, and Oppo experiencing drops of 15%, 7%, and 29%, respectively. This shift in the market landscape reflects the changing dynamics of the smartphone industry in China.
