Humanoid robot-maker partners with OpenAI
From EPT Magazine:
OpenAI is partnering with robotics startup Figure to integrate its AI systems into humanoid robots. The deal includes $675 million in funding from tech giants like Amazon, Microsoft, and Nvidia. Figure aims to mass-produce human-like robots for various settings, highlighting a potential growth market in robotics. The collaboration with OpenAI will focus on AI models for Figure’s robots, leveraging existing technologies like GPT and DALL-E.
Figure plans to use OpenAI’s AI models to speed up its commercial rollout and enable robots to process language. Despite potential benefits, experts debate the practicality of humanoid robots due to technical challenges. Venture capitalists like McRock Capital favor investing in non-humanoid robots, citing long timelines and significant technical hurdles in perfecting humanoid robots.
OpenAI’s CEO expressed renewed interest in robotics following earlier setbacks. The company aims to develop intelligent robotic systems after initially struggling with simulation and hardware issues. By focusing on cognition first, OpenAI hopes to overcome previous challenges and contribute to the advancement of robotics technology.
