Microsoft, Open AI’s Next Gen Supercomputer

Microsoft and OpenAI are collaborating on a $100 billion data project with an AI supercomputer named “Stargate” set to debut in 2028. The project is expected to be funded by Microsoft and will involve building a series of supercomputers over the next six years, with the US-based model being the largest. The estimated cost was discussed with Altman and Microsoft’s preliminary calculations provide insight.
Stargate is the fifth stage in a five-phase strategy for supercomputers that Microsoft and OpenAI are developing. A smaller fourth-phase supercomputer is also in the works for OpenAI, expected to be ready by 2026. To enhance AI capabilities, Microsoft is preparing for the next wave of infrastructure advancements, utilizing processors from multiple manufacturers. The total cost of the project may reach $115 billion, more than three times what Microsoft spent on capital expenditures for infrastructure last year.
