Microsoft and OpenAI are teaming up to construct a $100 billion data center featuring an AI supercomputer named Stargate. This project, expected to be 100 times more costly than current centers, is part of plans to build multiple supercomputers over the next six years.
The joint venture will include “millions of GPUs” and cost significantly more than any existing data centers in operation today. OpenAI is gearing up to release its next major upgrade by early next year, with Microsoft working on a fourth-phase supercomputer set to launch in 2026.
The entire project is estimated to cost Microsoft $115 billion, exceeding their capital expenditures for the past year. Over 10,000 data centers are currently in operation worldwide, with Washington DC being a major hub for data center activity. Google, Amazon, Meta, and Microsoft all have a significant presence in the Washington DC market.
