OpenAI in talks with Abu Dhabi investment firm to build semiconductor manufacturing capacity for AI processors

1. MGX, an Abu Dhabi-based investment company, is in talks to fund Sam Altman’s plan to build semiconductor manufacturing capacity for AI processors. The move aligns with the UAE’s goal to be a key player in the AI industry, aiming to reduce dependency on Nvidia.

2. OpenAI is striving to develop its own semiconductors to ensure a steady supply of AI chips. Sam Altman, the CEO, estimates the cost of building new facilities could reach up to $7 trillion. Talks with chipmakers and nation-states are ongoing for support.

3. MGX, an AI-focused fund from the UAE, led by Sheikh Tahnoon, aims to make Abu Dhabi a central hub for AI development. The UAE is actively attracting top AI figures like Elon Musk. Sheikh Tahnoon also heads G42, a major AI-focused holding backed by Abu Dhabi’s sovereign fund.

4. The UAE’s strategic moves in AI are evident with initiatives like appointing the world’s first AI minister and opening an AI-focused graduate university. However, geopolitical challenges like U.S.-China tensions are impacting partnerships. G42 is adjusting collaborations with Chinese companies like Huawei due to U.S. concerns.
